Investigative journalist Allwell Ene of Megaletrics Media Group was violently attacked by hoodlums in the Garrison Junction area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on April 13, 2026, while carrying out a fact-finding mission on rising criminal activities in the area.
According to reports, the journalist was filming activities in the area when some suspected hoodlums noticed him recording and became suspicious. They confronted him and questioned him about his presence and his reason for taking videos.
After he identified himself as a journalist, the situation quickly escalated into violence. More than 15 hoodlums reportedly surrounded Ene and subjected him to a brutal assault.
They punched and beat him repeatedly, tore his clothes, seized his mobile phone, and stole an unspecified amount of money and other personal belongings. The attackers also inflicted injuries on his face and eyes while continuing the assault in public view.
Following the attack, Ene met with the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, who assured him that the matter was under investigation and that those responsible would be identified and prosecuted. Ene said he was issued a medical examination form as part of the investigation.
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) calls on the Rivers State Police Command to conduct a prompt, impartial, and transparent investigation into the attack and ensure that all those responsible are identified and brought to justice. The authorities must also ensure that Ene receives appropriate medical and psychosocial support and that his seized or stolen belongings are recovered where possible.
The MFWA also urges media organisations to strengthen safety training and provide reporters with guidance on conducting investigations in high-risk environments.
