Samad Uthman

Samad Uthman is a Nigerian investigative multimedia journalist, video editor, and videographer whose work focuses on environment, corruption, and human rights. Winner of the Health reporting category, his investigative piece, ‘Pfizer Kano Trial: 24 years after, some victims not compensated and still can’t live normal lives’ exposes how the consent of the guardians of two hundred children administered with Trovafloxacin (Trovan), an antibiotic then newly manufactured by Pfizer were not sought as required in such procedures. The Federal Ministry of Health investigation committee set up to investigate the clinical trial of Trovan by Pfizer found out that the Principal Investigator gave a backdated Ethical Committee Clearance to Pfizer, and thus a forged approval to do the test in the country. Three visiting American doctors of Pfizer who were not cleared nor licensed by the Nigerian Medical Council to practice in Nigeria participated in the patient care.
