Cletus Umoh Okpong is PREMIUM TIMES’ regional editor for ‘South-south’ Nigeria. His story, “A six-part investigative series which exposes an unimaginable rot in public education in one of Nigeria’s richest states” was adjudged the best report for the Investigative Category.

A comprehensive investigative report, the six-part story is the result of over one year filed interviews and research on the poor state of public education delivery in Nigeria. Specifically, the report examines how corruption, poor budget planning and implementation, and intentional negligence is collapsing public education in Akwa Ibom state in Nigeria.

Following the report’s revelations, the Akwa Ibom government has commenced rehabilitation works in some of the most deprived schools. In September 2019, the Akwa Ibom government organised an education summit to design long-term measures to address the issues the report revealed.
