The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) is implementing a 12-month project in Togo to improve the country’s press freedom environment, so that the media can play their watchdog role and help strengthen the rule of law. The project is funded by the Dutch Foreign Ministry through the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ghana.
As part of the project, the MFWA monitors and reports on press freedom, freedom of expression (including expression through protests) and the safety of journalists in Togo. Over the project period (September 2025 to August 2026), the organisation will publish monthly reports giving a month-by-month overview of the situation in Togo.
This report highlights the major press freedom and freedom of expression issues observed in Togo in May 2026.
