Press freedom in West Africa is under attack as democracy retreats. A major contributing factor to this decline is the resurgence of coups d’état in the region. For instance, between 2020 and 2022 alone, the region witnessed seven coup d’états with five being successful and two failing. The resurgence of coups d’état in the region have dealt a heavy blow to freedom of expression and of the press. In this publication, the MFWA discusses the impact of the democratic recession on freedom of expression and press freedom in the region. The publication also highlights some recommendations from key stakeholders.
