Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) gets new President

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) extends its heartfelt congratulations to the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) on the successful conduct of its presidential election and the peaceful transition of leadership on June 14, 2025. We also warmly congratulate Alhaji Manika Kamara on his election as President of the Association.

A longstanding servant of the Association, Mr. Kamara brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as Secretary General and Assistant Secretary General of SLAJ. His election signals continuity in the Association’s commitment to professionalism, press freedom, and solidarity among media practitioners.

In his victory speech, Mr. Kamara described the outcome as a collective triumph, “This is not just my win. This is SLAJ’s victory a victory for unity, resilience, and the enduring spirit of press freedom in Sierra Leone.”

He also acknowledged his opponent, Mustapha Sesay, for a spirited and visionary campaign, and called for unity and collaboration in advancing the mission of SLAJ.

Mr. Kamara pledged to lead with integrity, transparency, and a renewed focus on strengthening the welfare of journalists, deepening professional standards, and defending the media’s role as a pillar of democracy.

“SLAJ is not a name. SLAJ is a legacy. A responsibility. A promise. And today, we renew that promise to each other, to the truth, and to the nation,” he affirmed.

The MFWA commends SLAJ not only for a successful election process but also for its longstanding contribution to the defence of press freedom, media rights, and democratic governance in Sierra Leone. The peaceful and participatory nature of the election underscores the strength of the Association’s internal democracy and its commitment to institutional growth.

As a regional partner in promoting freedom of expression and media development, the MFWA is proud of its longstanding collaboration with SLAJ and remains committed to supporting the Association in its work to protect journalists and promote ethical, independent journalism in Sierra Leone and the West African region.
