The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has received a second grant from the Wikimedia Foundation’s Knowledge Equity Fund. The new grant of $148,500 will help the organisation expand its work in investigative journalism, freedom of expression, and digital rights across West Africa.
In 2021, the MFWA was one of the first groups to receive support from the Equity Fund, which was created to address racial and structural gaps in global knowledge. This new grant was announced in July 2025, to continue supporting organisations that help close knowledge gaps and support underrepresented communities.
“This support is a strong endorsement of our work and a timely boost to continue advancing public-interest journalism and digital rights in our region,” said Dora Boamah Mawutor, Director of the Freedom of Expression and Digital Rights Programme at MFWA. “We are excited to receive this second grant to strengthen access to information, amplify marginalised voices, and promote equity in knowledge sharing.”
As part of the new phase, the MFWA will work closely with the Wikimedia Ghana User Group, one of four “Connected Grantees” selected to collaborate with the Wikimedia movement. Together, we will promote public-interest journalism and civic advocacy from West Africa on Wikipedia and other open knowledge platforms.
