The Fourth Estate is a public-interest, accountability journalism project of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA). The project aims to utilise the power of independent investigative journalism to serve the interest of the public by holding duty-bearers accountable, highlighting critical development issues and giving a voice to the vulnerable.
The MFWA is seeking a Senior Editor to help oversee and further elevate our accountability journalism work under The Fourth Estate project. The position holder will work with and supervise a team of reporters, senior reporters and editors in producing revelatory and impactful investigative journalism.
We are looking for an experienced journalist and leader with proven track record of integrity and passion for using journalism to promote public accountability, national development and issues affecting the poor and marginalised. The ideal person must also have a proven skill for guiding reporters, senior reporters and editors in using ambitious and creative approaches for doing impactful stories.
We are looking for someone with sound news judgment, proven capacity for critical and logical analysis, great skill for piecing together complex issues or pieces of evidence in a coherent fashion for exemplary revelatory story-telling.
Key Tasks:
- Supervising a team of journalists and guiding the conception of impactful stories and projects
- Providing support to journalists in generating great story ideas and ensuring that stories are produced creatively and professionally as possible
- Editing stories, including identifying and fixing structural and logical issues and elevating writing quality
- Serving as a champion for accountability and public-interest journalism
- Leading in developing and producing investigative stories in multi-media formats when necessary
- Liaising with lawyers for pre-publication legal vetting of stories
Key Qualifications:
- At least a first Degree in Journalism
- At least ten years experience in journalism including experience in producing impactful public-interest accountability stories
- Demonstrable experience as a newsroom editor overseeing a team of journalists and supervising the production of impactful stories
