The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), with funding from the German Development Cooperation is inviting applications from interested journalists in Ghana to participate in a series of three intensive capacity-building workshops on investigative journalism, data journalism, fact-checking, and the effective use of Ghana’s Right to Information (RTI) law.
The trainings forms part of activities under the MFWA project titled, “Countering corruption through accountability journalism and improved freedom of expression environment in Ghana”, which seeks to strengthen the capacity of the media, especially investigative journalists, to produce investigative reports around issues of corruption and promote accountability that addresses socio-economic disparities. The project also seeks to improve the freedom of expression environment in Ghana. This initiative is part of the Participation, Accountability, Integrity for a Resilient Democracy (PAIReD) programme, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), co-financed by the EU and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), and implemented by GIZ in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance.
Specifically, the project will be made up of two components: 1) strengthening the capacity of investigative journalists to produce stories that expose corruption; and 2) improving the safety of journalists and freedom of expression environment in Ghana to foster participatory, transparent and accountable governance in Ghana.
About the Trainings
The trainings aim to enhance the knowledge and skills of 30 investigative journalists (with at least 30% female participation) to enable them to produce quality stories on corruption-related issues. Participants will benefit from three separate three-day residential workshops that will focus on:
- Investigative Journalism Bootcamp – adopting investigative reporting methods to uncover corruption-related issues.
- Using the Right to Information (RTI) Law in Journalism – understanding and applying Ghana’s RTI law to access critical information for story production.
- Data Journalism and Fact-checking – applying data-driven approaches and fact-checking techniques in investigative reporting.
Each workshop will also include a session on gender-differentiated dimensions of corruption.
The trainings will bring together 10 journalists each from the Ashanti, Northern, and Greater Accra regions. The same group of selected participants will attend all three workshops for a holistic capacity-building experience.
