On January 16, 2019, some hoodlums, suspected to be political party thugs, assaulted Ibrahim Bababa, a radio presenter with Albaraka Radio in Bauchi State.
Bababa was at work in the newsroom when the thugs burst in and assaulted him in what appeared to be a targeted attack. The journalist sustained some injuries from the attack, according to the Punch newspaper.
The Bauchi Council of the National Union of Journalists condemned the attack as barbaric in a statement issued on January 18, 2019.
“During an emergency state working committee meeting of the union, members unanimously described as unacceptable how hoodlums can gain access into a broadcast studio and successfully carry out their nefarious action,” the NUJ said in the statement signed by State Secretary, Yakubu Muhammad Lame.
The MFWA also condemns the attack on Bababa and calls on the police to investigate it and apprehend the perpetrators. We also urge the Management of Albaraka Radio to take steps to secure their premises against all intruders.
