The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) condemns the assault on journalist Murtala Inusah, by followers of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako, and demand the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.
Inusah, the court correspondent of the Accra-based Excellence in Broadcasting (EIB) Network, was attacked on October 16, 2024, while covering the court appearance of Bishop Amoako in connection with a fatal accident allegedly caused by his under-aged son.
The reporter was pounced upon and beaten by supporters of the bishop while he was filming the proceedings. He lost his mobile phone in the process. A Police officer attached to court, who went to the journalist’s rescue was also assaulted.
The Group Managing Editor of the EIB Network, Joojo Cobbina, told the MFWA in a telephone interview that Inusah is recovering from the pains and cuts he suffered after receiving treatment at the hospital.
“We have lodged a formal complaint with the Ministries Police and provided a video of the incident to enable them identify the assailants. Hopefully, the police will pursue the perpetrators to ensure that justice is served,” Cobbina told the MFWA.
The Ghana Journalists’ Association (GJA) has condemned the attack and urged the police to arrest and prosecute the assailants.
The MFWA joins the GJA in condemning the wanton assault on the reporter and demands prompt response from the law enforcement authorities.
We however commend Bishop Salifu Amoako for condemning the actions of his supporters and apologizing for what he says is an embarrassment to him.
