The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) in partnership with Socioserve-Ghana is organising a special training on conflict-sensitive reporting for 20 journalists from five regions across Ghana.
The training exercise that is being implemented with funding support from the European Union (EU) is scheduled for June 28 – 29, 2016 at Kpong in the Eastern region of Ghana.
The training is aimed at equipping the journalists with relevant knowledge and skills to enable them effectively cover elections and report on sensitive issues during their programming.
Participants will include radio news editors and programme hosts. They will be sensitised on the detrimental effects of airing indecent language and hate speech and be equipped with skills for effective programming devoid of hate speech.
‘This training forms part of efforts to promote decent language and issues-based programming towards peaceful elections in Ghana,’ said Abigail Larbi-Odei, MFWA’s Programme Manager for Media, Development and Democracy.
The MFWA is currently monitoring hate speech and indecent campaign language on 50 radio stations across the country. Various capacity building programmes are planned for the stations being monitored to help improve their capacity to support peaceful and credible elections.
