On November 26, 2025, Guinea-Bissau’s High Military Command for the Restoration of National Security and Public Order announced they had seized “total control” of the country, suspended all institutions, halted the electoral process and closed the nation’s borders, following gunfire near the presidential palace and electoral commission offices in the capital, Bissau.
In its statement, the military said it had assumed full control of State powers, citing the need to restore “order and security.” This move comes on the eve of the announcement of results from the November 23 presidential and legislative elections, casting serious doubt on the credibility and future of the electoral process.
The military equally imposed restrictions on media outlets raising serious concerns about freedom of expression, access to information, and the possibility of informed civic participation. Military officers ordered several radio stations to suspend broadcasting and journalists to leave the premises of their outlets.
At the same time, citizens reported widespread restrictions on major social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram.
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) is deeply concerned about the unfolding situation in Guinea-Bissau following the military takeover, and strongly condemns the restrictions on media activities and social media platforms. Restricting independent media and digital platforms further limits civic space and deprives citizens of their right to access trustworthy information. These actions pose a severe setback for democratic governance, especially at a critical moment when the country needs transparency and reliable information.
The MFWA calls on military authorities to immediately restore the operations of all media houses and access to social media and digital platforms, ensuring that citizens can receive reliable information and engage in public discourse. Independent journalism and open communication are essential for public accountability and for keeping citizens informed without fear. Limiting these freedoms increases anxiety, fuels speculation and mis/disinformation, and undermines efforts to maintain peace and stability.
