On December 3, 2024, Nigerien activist Moussa Tchangari, Secretary-General of the civil society group Alternative Espaces Citoyens, was arrested at his home upon returning from official travel to Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria.
According to his family, unidentified armed men took Tchangari away in the presence of his wife and children. His mobile phone, laptop and suitcase were also seized. No reason was given at the time of his arrest.
Two days later, his lawyers located him at the Central Unit for Counter-Terrorism and Cross-Border Crime Control (Service Central de Lutte Contre le Terrorisme et la Criminalité Transfrontalière), where they were permitted to meet with him.
In a press release issued by Alternative Espaces Citoyens and confirmed by his lawyers, Tchangari has been charged with supporting acts of terrorism, undermining national security, and criminal association linked to terrorism.
Media reports suggest the charges may be connected to Tchangari’s outspoken criticism of Niger’s ruling authorities. Some speculation also links his arrest to comments he reportedly made during events in Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria. However, no official explanation has been provided.
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) condemns the arbitrary arrest of Moussa Tchangari and calls for his immediate release. We urge the authorities in Niger to respect civil liberties and cease all forms of intimidation against critical voices.
