In Burkina Faso, the media is gasping for breath and the civic space has shrunk to near closure. In 2023, a number of media houses were sanctioned, two foreign journalists expelled and several local media professionals threatened.
Also, the section of the population that has bought into the patriotism mantra of the military government has been allowed a large latitude to go after suspected “unpatriotic” journalists, activists and media outlets with impunity.
More ominously, the country passed a law in November that allows the government to appoint the head of the media regulatory authority and the deputy. This report recaps one of the most repressive years of Burkina Faso’s post-Blaise Compaore era.
