The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) in collaboration with NORSAAC is organising a one-day public forum on the theme: Improving Women’s Participation in the 2023 District Assembly Elections: The Role of the Media.
The Forum will be held at the Ghana National Association of Teachers’ (GNAT) hall in Tamale on October 25, 2023.
The forum will bring together key stakeholders including civil society organisations, media, academia, traditional authorities, women and youth groups, political parties and state actors, among others to discuss the challenges of women’s participation in governance, particularly, the District Assembly Elections and call on public support for increased participation.
In Ghana, women constitute about 50.5% of the population according to the 2021 Population and Housing Census. In spite of their larger population, women are not well represented in governance. Of the seven local government elections held in Ghana since the Fourth Republic, women have constituted only 3.8% of the aspirants, missing out on the 30% United Nations’ recommended minimum threshold.
To contribute to changing this narrative, and ensure that more women contest in elections, particularly, the District Assembly elections, the MFWA in partnership with NORSAAC, is convening a public forum to discuss how the media can contribute to pushing down the barriers to women’s participation in elections and governance in Ghana. Recommendations from the forum will be harnessed to inform advocacy.
The forum on women’s participation in the 2023 District Assembly Elections is being organised with funding from the Danish Foreign Ministry through Oxfam in Ghana.
