The first quarter of 2023 (January-March) recorded 55 freedom of expression (FOE) violations, the highest number recorded in eighteen months. The figure is 160% higher than that of the preceding quarter (October to December 2022) which stood at 21.
Nigeria emerged first at the top of the repression list with 31 violations, followed by Niger (6 violations). Guinea and Senegal each recorded 4 violations, while Burkina Faso followed with 3 violations. Mali and Sierra Leone each recorded 2 violations. The remaining countries, that is, Togo, Mauritania and Ghana each recorded one violation.
