Across the world, arguments for the adoption and effective implementation of Right to Information (RTI) laws have been consistent. For a government to be democratic, citizens must be privy to government’s business. Citizens must be well informed about the actions and inactions of their political representatives in order to participate in local governance. It is based on these premises and with the aim of improving governance and access to information that Ghana officially passed the RTI Bill into Law on March 26th, 2019.
It is therefore crucial to document ways in which the RTI law can be used to enhance citizens access to information and improve the democratic experience of the country. This policy brief highlights the global trends in terms of access to information, and provides detailed explanations of Ghana’s RTI as well as how it can facilitate citizens’ access to information at the local level. It further gives practical examples of how citizens can access information in the local context and posits specific recommendations on how Ghana can effectively implement the RTI law.
